Ezekiel 36 Devotional

Moved to Walk by His Spirit

“And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes and to carefully observe My ordinances.”Ezekiel 36:27 (BSB)

God first speaks to the land. The mountains of Israel have been mocked, but he is on their side, and they will be farmed and filled with people again (36:8-11). Then he explains why his people were scattered. They defiled the land, and in exile they profaned his name, because the nations saw the LORD's people forced out of his land (36:17-20).

The rescue starts from God's side. He will gather them, sprinkle clean water on them, and cleanse them from every idol (36:24-25). He will replace their hard, stony hearts with living ones and place his own Spirit inside them, so that he moves them to keep his ways (36:26-27). Only after they are washed and renewed do they look back on their ways with shame (36:31). Paul says God saved us by his mercy, not our deeds, washing us and making us new through the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5). Obedience is not your entrance fee to God. It is what his Spirit grows in those he has already made clean.

To think about: Where have you been trying to obey God in your own strength, and how might you ask his Spirit to move you instead?

About Ezekiel 36: God Promises Israel a New Heart

God promises that Israel’s mocked and ruined mountains will again be farmed and filled with people. He scattered Israel for defiling the land, but for the sake of His holy name He will gather them, wash them clean, give them new hearts and His own Spirit, and make the land flourish like Eden.
