Ezekiel 26 Devotional

Plans Held in His Hand

Tyre hears that Jerusalem has fallen and starts calculating. The gate that once stood in the way of trade has been broken open, and Tyre expects to be filled from the ruins (26:2). God's answer is short: he is against Tyre, and he will raise up nations against her the way the sea throws up its waves (26:3). Her walls come down, her music falls silent, and the city is scraped to a bare rock where fishermen spread their nets (26:4, 13-14). Rulers along the coast step down from their thrones and sit trembling on the ground (26:16).

Tyre's sin was treating another people's disaster as a business opportunity. James warns traders who map out a year of profit as though tomorrow belonged to them, and tells them to hold every plan under the Lord's will instead (James 4:13-15). Your future rests in God's hand, not in anyone else's misfortune, so you can work and plan honestly without needing someone else to fall for you to rise.

To think about: Is there any plan or hope in your life that quietly depends on someone else losing, and how would trusting God's hand change it?

About Ezekiel 26: The Coming Fall of Tyre

God announces judgment on the wealthy port city of Tyre for gloating over Jerusalem’s ruin and expecting to gain from it. He will send nations against it like waves, including Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, scrape it down to bare stone, and make the coastal rulers tremble as it goes down to the realm of the dead.
