Ezekiel 2 Devotional

Faithful Whether or Not Heard

“But speak My words to them, whether they listen or refuse to listen, for they are rebellious.”Ezekiel 2:7 (BSB)

Ezekiel is told to stand, and the Spirit himself sets him on his feet (2:1-2). Then God tells him the truth about his assignment. The people are rebellious and stubborn, and their fathers were the same (2:3-4). Ezekiel is to speak anyway, whether they pay attention or not, so that they will know God sent them a prophet (2:5-7). Three times he is told not to be afraid, though living among them will feel like sitting among thorns and scorpions (2:6).

God does not promise Ezekiel results, but he does supply the message: a scroll from his own hand, written on both sides with grief (2:9-10). Ezekiel's task is not to produce a response but to be faithful with what he has been given. Paul says something similar: one person plants, another waters, but only God gives the growth (1 Corinthians 3:6-7). The outcome of speaking truth belongs to God, and that frees you to speak it with love and leave the rest with him.

To think about: Where are you holding back from saying something true and kind because you cannot control how it will be received?

About Ezekiel 2: Ezekiel Called to a Rebellious People

The Spirit raises Ezekiel to his feet, and God sends him to the stubborn, rebellious people of Israel to speak God’s words whether or not they heed. He must not fear them or rebel himself, and a hand holds out to him a scroll covered on both sides with lament and woe.
