Ezekiel 10 Devotional

Glory at the Threshold

“Then the glory of the LORD moved away from the threshold of the temple and stood above the cherubim.”Ezekiel 10:18 (BSB)

Ezekiel sees again what he saw by the River Kebar, and now he recognizes the living creatures as cherubim (10:15, 20). The man in linen takes fiery coals from beside the cherubim to scatter over Jerusalem (10:2, 7). Then the glory of the LORD rises from above the cherubim and stands at the threshold of the temple, filling the court with brightness (10:4). Soon it moves again, out to the east gate of the LORD's house (10:18-19).

The departure comes in stages, and the text slows to record each one. The glory was not chained to the temple, and a people who had driven God from his sanctuary could not keep him by keeping the building (8:6). Yet the story of God's glory does not end at the east gate. John says that in Jesus the Word became human and lived among people, who saw his glory (John 1:14). The presence Israel lost from a building returned in a person, and through Jesus, God comes near to you.

To think about: Where are you tempted to rely on religious places or habits instead of on God himself, who has come near in Jesus?

In Ezekiel’s vision the man dressed in linen is sent to take fiery coals from beside the cherubim and spread them across Jerusalem. Ezekiel recognizes the cherubim, who move with their wheels, as the creatures of his first vision, and God’s glory moves with them to the temple’s eastern gate.
