Exodus 4 Devotional

Sent with What We Lack

“Now go! I will help you as you speak, and I will teach you what to say.””Exodus 4:12 (BSB)

Moses keeps finding reasons not to go. The people may not believe him, so God gives him signs: a staff that becomes a snake, a hand made leprous and then restored, and Nile water that will turn to blood (4:1-9). He is not a good speaker, so God reminds him who made the human mouth and promises to help him speak (4:10-12). Finally Moses simply asks God to send someone else (4:13).

The LORD's anger burns (4:14). Yet in the same breath he provides Aaron, already on his way and ready to be glad at the sight of his brother. God does not choose people because they are adequate. He is patient with their reluctance and supplies what they lack, though he does not withdraw the call. Paul heard the Lord tell him that his grace was enough and that his power does its work through weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). The weakness you keep pointing to may be the very place God means to show his help.

To think about: What weakness have you been offering God as a reason to hold back, and how might he meet you in it?

About Exodus 4: Moses Sent Back to Egypt

God gives Moses signs to show the elders, including a staff that becomes a snake, but Moses protests that he cannot speak well. God appoints Aaron to speak for him. On the way, the Lord confronts Moses until Zipporah circumcises their son, and the elders believe.
