Exodus 31 Devotional

The Spirit in Skilled Hands

“And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability, and knowledge in all kinds of craftsmanship,”Exodus 31:3 (BSB)

Having described every part of his dwelling, God now names the people who will make it. He has called Bezalel by name and filled him with his Spirit, giving him skill, ability, and knowledge for every kind of craft, from metalwork and gem cutting to woodcarving (31:2-5). He has appointed Oholiab to help him and given skill to all the craftsmen (31:6). The verbs belong to God: he called, he filled, he appointed, he gave.

Then God speaks of the Sabbath, a sign between him and Israel so they would know that he is the LORD who makes them holy (31:13). Holiness was not something Israel produced by labor, even sacred labor. God gave it. The chapter ends with God handing Moses two stone tablets written by his own finger (31:18). Paul says the same Spirit still gives different gifts to each believer, for the good of all (1 Corinthians 12:4-7). Whatever skill is in your hands today came from him, and it can be offered back to him.

To think about: What skill or ability has God given you, and how could you offer it back to him this week?
