Exodus 29 Devotional

Every Morning and Evening

“And they will know that I am the LORD their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt so that I might dwell among them. I am the LORD their God.”Exodus 29:46 (BSB)

Before Aaron and his sons can serve as priests, they must be ordained over seven days (29:35). They are washed, clothed, and anointed (29:4-9). They lay their hands on a bull and two rams, which are then offered, the bull as a sin offering (29:10-25). The ones who would offer sacrifices for others first needed atonement themselves (29:33).

Then God sets a rhythm: one lamb every morning and another at twilight, for generations (29:38-42). The chapter ends with the purpose behind it all. God will meet with Israel there, live among them, and be their God, and they will know he brought them out of Egypt for this very reason, to live among them (29:43-46). The exodus was a rescue into God's company. Yet the lambs kept coming, because no offering was ever the last. Hebrews contrasts priests repeating sacrifices that could never take away sins with Christ, who offered one sacrifice for all time and sat down (Hebrews 10:11-12). Your welcome before God rests on an offering that is finished.

To think about: Do you live as though your welcome before God must be earned again each morning, or as one resting on a finished sacrifice?

About Exodus 29: The Consecration of the Priests

God describes the seven-day ordination of Aaron and his sons, with washing, clothing, anointing, and sin, burnt, and ordination offerings. He commands a daily burnt offering of two lambs and promises to meet with Israel at the tabernacle and dwell among them as their God.
