Exodus 24 Devotional
Welcomed After the Blood
“But God did not lay His hand on the nobles of Israel; they saw Him, and they ate and drank.”Exodus 24:11 (BSB)
Moses reads God's words to the people, and twice they answer together that they will do everything the LORD has said (24:3, 7). He builds an altar with twelve pillars, and he splashes half the blood on the altar and half on the people, declaring that it seals the covenant (24:6-8). Before Moses comes back down from the mountain, those promises will be broken. The covenant is sealed with blood, not with Israel's resolve.
Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy elders go up and see the God of Israel, and he does not strike them down. They eat and drink in his presence (24:9-11). Earlier, anyone who touched the mountain was to die (19:12). Now there is a meal. On the night before he died, Jesus took a cup and called it his own covenant blood, poured out for the forgiveness of sins (Matthew 26:28). The table you are invited to rests on his blood, not on the strength of your promises.
To think about: Are you resting your place with God on your own promises to him, or on the blood of Jesus?
