Exodus 18 Devotional
A Story Worth Telling
“Now I know that the LORD is greater than all other gods, for He did this when they treated Israel with arrogance.””Exodus 18:11 (BSB)
Jethro, Moses' father-in-law and a priest of Midian, comes to the mountain of God with Moses' wife and sons. Moses tells him everything the LORD had done to Pharaoh, all the hardships they met on the way, and how the LORD had rescued them (18:8). Jethro rejoices, blesses the LORD, and says that now he knows the LORD is greater than every other god (18:9-11). Then he offers sacrifices, and Aaron and the elders share a meal with him in God's presence (18:12).
A plain account of what God had done brought an outsider to worship. Moses did not leave out the hardships; he told them alongside the rescue. The next day Jethro watches Moses judge the people alone from morning to evening and tells him the work is too heavy for one man, so capable, God-fearing leaders are chosen to share it (18:13-26). The God who delivered Israel never needed Moses to carry everything himself. Someone near you may simply need to hear what God has done for you.
To think about: Who in your life could you tell, plainly and honestly, about something God has done for you?
