Esther 8 Devotional
Light After the Decree
“For the Jews it was a time of light and gladness, of joy and honor.”Esther 8:16 (BSB)
Haman is dead, but his decree still stands. Esther falls at the king's feet weeping and begs him to undo it (8:3-6). The king cannot. A law written in his name and sealed with his ring can never be revoked (8:8). So he gives Mordecai the ring and lets him write a second decree, allowing the Jews in every city to gather and defend themselves on the very day set for their destruction (8:9-11).
The danger is not erased, but it is answered. Couriers race out again, Mordecai leaves the palace in royal robes, and among the Jews mourning gives way to gladness and celebration (8:15-17). The same provinces that had heard a sentence of death now hear a word of hope, and many people of the land even become Jews. The chapter shows how God can turn a story without a single miracle on the page. He works through grief, petitions, signet rings, and couriers on fast horses. The ordinary means in your life are not beneath his use either.
To think about: What ordinary means in your life, like a conversation or a responsibility, might God be using for good right now?
