Ecclesiastes 10 Devotional

Wisdom for Ordinary Days

“The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious, but the lips of a fool consume him.”Ecclesiastes 10:12 (BSB)

Ecclesiastes 10 reads like a handful of sayings gathered from ordinary life. A little folly can spoil wisdom the way dead flies spoil perfume (10:1). Calmness can settle an angry ruler (10:4). A dull blade demands more effort, while skill gets the job done (10:10). Neglect brings a sagging roof and a leaking house (10:18).

The chapter also admits that the world does not always reward wisdom. Fools are raised to high places while the capable sit low, and servants ride while princes walk (10:5-7). Wisdom does not guarantee a fair outcome. Still, the Teacher treats it as worth having, because wise speech wins favor while a fool's talk ruins him (10:12). God cares about the small, practical places where most of life is lived: speech, work, temper, and timing. And the wisdom needed for them is not something we must produce alone. James says that anyone who lacks wisdom should ask God, who gives generously without finding fault (James 1:5). An ordinary task is a good place to start asking.

To think about: In which ordinary conversation or task today do you most need to ask God for wisdom?
