Deuteronomy 6 Devotional
Love with Everything
“And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”Deuteronomy 6:5 (BSB)
Deuteronomy 6 holds the confession Israel would repeat for generations: the LORD our God, the LORD is one (6:4). From that one God comes one all-consuming command, to love him with all your heart, soul, and strength (6:5). Jesus named this the most important commandment of all (Mark 12:29-30). It is not a call to a religious corner of life. These words are meant to be talked over at home and on the road, at bedtime and in the morning (6:7).
Notice what Moses tells parents to say when a child asks what all these laws mean. They do not begin with rules. They begin with a story: they had been slaves in Egypt, and the LORD had brought them out with a mighty hand (6:20-21). The command to love rests on what God has already done. That is also why the danger Moses names is forgetting, especially once Israel is full and living in houses they did not build (6:10-12). Comfort can quietly push out gratitude. The remedy is to keep telling, in ordinary moments, what God has done.
To think about: In what ordinary moment today could you speak about what God has done for you?
