Deuteronomy 32 Devotional

The Rock Whose Ways Are Just

“He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just. A God of faithfulness without injustice, righteous and upright is He.”Deuteronomy 32:4 (BSB)

The song Moses teaches Israel begins with God himself. The LORD is the Rock. His work is perfect, all his ways are just, and he is faithful without any wrong in him (32:4). He found Israel in a barren, howling wilderness and guarded them as the apple of his eye, like an eagle spreading its wings beneath its young (32:10-11). Then the song turns. Jeshurun, a poetic name for Israel, grew fat and kicked, forgetting the Rock who gave them birth (32:15, 18).

The judgment that follows is fierce (32:22-25). Yet God will have compassion on his servants when he sees their strength is gone (32:36). He is the one who wounds and the one who heals (32:39). Justice belongs to him, and he will repay his enemies and cleanse his land and people (32:35, 43). Paul takes this up when he tells believers not to avenge themselves but to leave room for God's wrath (Romans 12:19). Because the Rock is just, the wrongs done to you can be laid down and left in his hands.

To think about: What wrong done to you are you still trying to settle yourself, and what would it look like to leave it with God?

About Deuteronomy 32: The Song of Moses

Moses sings of the Lord, the Rock whose ways are just, who chose Israel and carried them like an eagle. Israel grew fat and turned to false gods, so God will judge them, yet he will have compassion, take vengeance on his enemies, and atone for his land. Moses is told to climb Mount Nebo.
