Deuteronomy 29 Devotional

What God Has Made Plain

“The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, so that we may follow all the words of this law.”Deuteronomy 29:29 (BSB)

Moses gathers everyone for a covenant renewal: leaders and elders, wives and children, even the foreigners who cut wood and draw water (29:10-11). The covenant is also made with those not standing there that day (29:14-15). Israel had seen every sign and wonder, yet to this day the LORD had not given them a mind to understand or eyes to see (29:2-4). Seeing God's power is not the same as being changed by it. Only he can open the heart, and the next chapter promises that he will.

Moses also warns against a quiet kind of rebellion: the person who hears the covenant and assures himself he will be fine while following his own stubborn heart (29:19). The chapter closes with humble clarity. What is hidden belongs to the LORD, and what he has revealed is given to his people and their children, so that they may live by it (29:29). There is much God has not explained. You do not need every answer to live faithfully by what he has already made plain.

To think about: What unanswered question have you let keep you from obeying what God has already made plain?

About Deuteronomy 29: The Covenant Renewed in Moab

Moses gathers all Israel to renew the covenant in Moab, reminding them that the Lord kept them through the wilderness. The covenant includes future generations, and anyone who turns to idols will bring ruin on the land, while hidden matters rest with God and what he has revealed is Israel's to obey.
