Deuteronomy 14 Devotional

A Treasured People at the Table

“for you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD has chosen you to be a people for His prized possession out of all the peoples on the face of the earth.”Deuteronomy 14:2 (BSB)

Identity comes before instruction in this chapter. Israel are sons of the LORD their God, a holy people he has chosen as his treasured possession (14:1-2). The rules that follow, about mourning customs, clean and unclean animals, and what may be eaten, flow from that. Every meal was a small reminder that they belonged to God and were set apart from the nations around them.

The tithe law is surprising. A tenth of the harvest was to be eaten in God's presence, and if the trip was too far, the family could sell it, carry the money, and buy whatever they desired for a feast of rejoicing (14:23-26). Every third year the tithe stayed in town so that the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow could eat their fill (14:28-29). Holiness here looks like joy and generosity. Mark notes that Jesus' teaching later declared all foods clean (Mark 7:19), but the belonging behind these laws remains. You belong to God, and that can shape how you eat, celebrate, and share today.

To think about: How might knowing you belong to God shape the way you celebrate and share with those in need this week?

About Deuteronomy 14: Clean Food and the Tithe

As the Lord's treasured people, Israel must not cut themselves in mourning. Moses lists the animals they may and may not eat and commands a yearly tithe eaten before the Lord at his chosen place, with every third year's tithe stored for the Levites, foreigners, orphans, and widows.
