- Daniel 1: Daniel and His Friends in Babylon
God hands King Jehoiakim of Judah over to Nebuchadnezzar, and young Israelites of noble birth are taken to Babylon for training and given new names. Daniel resolves not to be made unclean by food from the royal table, a ten-day trial proves him right, and God gives the four friends unmatched wisdom.
- Daniel 2: Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream of a Great Statue
Nebuchadnezzar orders his wise men killed when they cannot recount and explain his dream. God reveals it to Daniel: a statue of gold, silver, bronze, iron and clay smashed by a stone that grows into a mountain, picturing God’s everlasting kingdom. The king honors Daniel’s God and promotes him.
- Daniel 3: The Fiery Furnace
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refuse to bow to King Nebuchadnezzar’s huge gold image and tell him they will stay loyal to God whether He rescues them or not. Thrown into a superheated furnace, they walk unharmed with a fourth figure, and the king praises their God and protects His honor by decree.
- Daniel 4: Nebuchadnezzar Humbled
Nebuchadnezzar tells in his own words how Daniel explained his dream of a giant tree felled to a stump and urged him to turn from his sins. A year later the king boasts of his greatness and lives like an animal until he looks to heaven, regains his reason, praises God’s eternal rule and is restored to his throne.
- Daniel 5: The Writing on the Wall
King Belshazzar drinks from the cups taken from God’s temple at a great feast, and a hand appears and writes on the palace wall. Daniel turns down the king’s rewards, rebukes his pride, and explains the message as God’s judgment. Belshazzar is killed that night, and Darius the Mede takes the kingdom.
- Daniel 6: Daniel in the Lions’ Den
Rival officials trick King Darius into banning prayer to anyone but himself, and Daniel keeps praying to God as before. He is thrown to the lions, but God keeps him unharmed, his accusers are punished, and Darius orders his people to fear and revere Daniel’s God. Daniel prospers under Darius and Cyrus.
- Daniel 7: Four Beasts and the Son of Man
Daniel dreams of four great beasts rising from a churning sea, the last one terrifying, with ten horns and a boastful little horn that wars on God’s holy people. God holds court and gives an endless kingdom to a figure like a son of man and to His saints, and Daniel is left deeply troubled.
- Daniel 8: The Ram, the Goat and the Little Horn
In a second vision Daniel sees a two-horned ram trampled by a goat whose great horn snaps and is replaced by four, and a small horn that attacks God’s sanctuary and sacrifice. The angel Gabriel explains the ram as Media and Persia’s kings and the goat as Greece’s king, and Daniel is left exhausted and bewildered.
- Daniel 9: Daniel’s Prayer and the Seventy Weeks
Reading Jeremiah’s prophecy that Jerusalem would lie desolate for seventy years, Daniel turns to God with fasting and a long prayer confessing Israel’s sin. He pleads for mercy for the sake of God’s name, and the angel Gabriel arrives with a message about seventy weeks decreed for his people and city.
- Daniel 10: Daniel’s Vision Beside the Tigris
After three weeks of mourning and self-denial, Daniel sees a radiant man in linen beside the Tigris River and collapses in weakness. The messenger says Daniel’s prayer was heard from the start, but Persia’s prince resisted him until Michael came to help, and he strengthens Daniel to hear what lies ahead.
- Daniel 11: Rival Kings and the Faithful Who Stand
A heavenly messenger tells Daniel of a long line of future kings who rise, scheme and fall in turn. A contemptible ruler attacks God’s covenant and temple, yet those who know God resist and the wise teach many through suffering. A self-exalting king appears, and at the end a conqueror perishes with none to rescue him.
- Daniel 12: Daniel’s Final Vision of Resurrection
Daniel learns that in a time of unequaled trouble Michael will arise and all his people recorded in God’s book will be rescued. Many of the dead will be raised, some to endless life and some to lasting disgrace, while the wise shine forever. Daniel must seal the words and is promised rest and resurrection.
