Colossians 1 Devotional

Everything Holds Together in Him

“He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”Colossians 1:17 (BSB)

Colossians 1 begins with a prayer that believers would walk worthy of the Lord, thanking the Father who has rescued them from the dominion of darkness and brought them into the kingdom of his Son (1:12-14). Then Paul breaks into one of the Bible's highest descriptions of Jesus. The Son makes the unseen God visible. All things in heaven and on earth were made through him and for him, and he keeps them in being (1:15-17).

This same Son is the one who made peace by his blood shed on the cross (1:20). People who were once alienated from God and hostile in their minds have been reconciled through his death, so that they may stand before God holy and blameless (1:21-22). The one who sustains the universe is the one who took hold of rebels to bring them home. Paul sums up the long-hidden mystery as Christ himself living in his people, their sure hope of glory (1:27). Nothing about your day lies outside the reach of the one who upholds it all.

To think about: What part of your life have you been treating as if it were outside Christ's care and rule?

About Colossians 1: The Supremacy of Christ

Paul thanks God for the Colossians' faith and prays they would be filled with knowledge of God's will. Christ is the image of the invisible God, through whom all things were created, and who reconciled all things by his cross. Paul rejoices in suffering for the church.
