Amos 9 Devotional

A Fallen Tent Raised Again

““In that day I will restore the fallen tent of David. I will repair its gaps, restore its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old,”Amos 9:11 (BSB)

Amos sees the Lord standing beside the altar, announcing a judgment no one can escape. Whether people dig down to the grave, climb to the heavens, or hide at the bottom of the sea, his hand will reach them (9:1-4). Even the exodus is no guarantee. He brought Israel out of Egypt, but he also brought the Philistines and the Arameans from their lands (9:7).

Yet he will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob. He will shake them like grain in a sieve, but not a pebble will fall to the ground (9:8-9). Then the book turns to hope. God will raise up the fallen tent of David, and rebuild it, so that it includes all the nations that bear his name (9:11-12). At the Jerusalem council James quoted this promise to show that God was taking a people for his name from the Gentiles (Acts 15:14-17). Judgment is not God's last word. What sin has ruined, he rebuilds, and he makes room in it for you.

To think about: What has fallen into ruin in your life that you need to trust God to rebuild in his way?
