Amos 7 Devotional
The Prophet Who Pleaded
“So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen,” He said.”Amos 7:3 (BSB)
In the first vision, Amos sees locusts stripping the land, and he pleads with God to forgive, because Jacob is so small. The LORD relents (7:1-3). In the second, a fire consumes the great deep, Amos pleads again, and again the LORD relents (7:4-6). Then comes a third vision: the Lord standing by a wall with a plumb line in his hand. He is measuring his people, and this time he will not spare them (7:7-9).
Amaziah the priest of Bethel accuses Amos of conspiracy and tells him to go back to Judah and stay away from the king's sanctuary (7:10-13). Amos replies that he was not a professional prophet but a herdsman and tender of fig trees, until the LORD took him from the flock and sent him (7:14-15). God hears intercession, and he also speaks a word no sanctuary can silence. Hebrews says Jesus always lives to intercede for those who draw near to God through him (Hebrews 7:25). That is reason enough to keep praying for others.
To think about: Who could you plead with God for today, trusting that he truly listens to intercession?
