Amos 5 Devotional

When Worship Becomes Noise

“But let justice roll on like a river, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”Amos 5:24 (BSB)

Amos sings a funeral song over Israel as if she has already fallen (5:2). Yet the lament is full of invitation. Seek the LORD and live, not the shrines at Bethel and Gilgal (5:4-6). The charges are concrete: people turn justice bitter, hate the one who speaks honestly in court, trample the poor, take bribes, and push the needy aside in the gate (5:7-12). So the call is equally concrete. Hate evil, love good, and establish justice (5:15).

Then God says something shocking about their worship. He hates their feasts, will not accept their offerings, and tells them to take away the noise of their songs (5:21-23). What he wants instead is justice rolling on like a river and righteousness like a stream that never dries up (5:24). Jesus taught the same order: leave your gift at the altar and first be reconciled to your brother (Matthew 5:23-24). The God who made the stars (5:8) cares how people are treated on Monday as well as how they sing on the Sabbath.

To think about: Is there a relationship or a wrong that needs to be made right before your worship can be wholehearted?

About Amos 5: A Lament and a Call to Seek God

Amos mourns Israel as already fallen and calls the people to seek God rather than their shrines, to love good, and to uphold fair courts. He warns that the coming day of judgment will bring darkness, that God rejects worship offered without justice, and that exile is coming.
