Acts 24 Devotional

The Danger of Later

“As Paul expounded on righteousness, self-control, and the coming judgment, Felix became frightened and said, “You may go for now. When I find the time, I will call for you.””Acts 24:25 (BSB)

Before Governor Felix, Paul's accusers bring polished flattery and charges they cannot prove (24:2-8, 24:13). Paul answers calmly. He worships the God of his fathers, believes the Law and the Prophets, and shares the hope that God will raise both the righteous and the wicked (24:14-15).

Later Felix sends for Paul to hear about faith in Christ Jesus. As Paul speaks about righteousness, self-control and the coming judgment, Felix becomes afraid. But instead of turning to God, he sends Paul away until a more convenient time (24:24-25). He keeps calling for Paul over the next two years, partly hoping for a bribe, and leaves him in prison to please the Jews (24:26-27). The chapter never records that convenient time arriving. God was patient with Felix. He heard the gospel again and again. But patience is not permission to postpone forever. Scripture says that now is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2). When God's word unsettles you, that is not a reason to push him away but an invitation to come to him today.

To think about: Is there something God has been pressing on you that you keep setting aside for a more convenient time?
