2 Samuel 8 Devotional

Victories That Belong to God

“Thus David reigned over all Israel and administered justice and righteousness for all his people:”2 Samuel 8:15 (BSB)

David defeats the Philistines, Moab, Zobah, the Arameans of Damascus, and Edom, and the text does not hide how harsh the wars were, including the Moabites measured off with a cord for death (8:2). Twice the narrator makes sure no one credits the wrong person: the LORD made David victorious wherever he went (8:6, 8:14). David dedicates the gold, silver, and bronze of the nations to the LORD instead of keeping them for himself (8:11).

The chapter ends with a portrait of what a king is for. David reigns over all Israel, doing what is just and right for all his people (8:15). It does not last, as the coming chapters show. But Isaiah looks ahead to a son of David whose rule will grow without end, upheld with justice and righteousness forever (Isaiah 9:7). Every victory here points past David to the LORD who gave it, and to the King whose justice will never fail. Your hope can rest there rather than on any human leader.

To think about: Where are you hoping a human leader will bring the justice that only Christ can fully give?
