2 Samuel 23 Devotional
Morning Light of a Just King
“Is not my house right with God? For He has established with me an everlasting covenant, ordered and secured in every part. Will He not bring about my full salvation and my every desire?”2 Samuel 23:5 (BSB)
David's last words are a prophecy. He says the Spirit of the LORD spoke through him (23:2), and God's word was about a king: one who rules with justice and in the fear of God is like sunrise on a cloudless morning (23:3-4). Then David asks whether his own house is right with God, and rests on the everlasting covenant God has made with him, arranged and guaranteed in every detail (23:5). His confidence rests not on his record but on God's promise.
The chapter then honors David's mighty men, and the LORD is credited with their great victories (23:10, 23:12). When three of them risk their lives to bring him water from Bethlehem, David pours it out to the LORD rather than drink what cost such risk (23:16-17). The list ends with one name: Uriah the Hittite (23:39). It is a quiet reminder of David's failure, set beside the promise of a King who rules perfectly. That King has come in Jesus, and his reign is the dawn the world awaits.
To think about: Where do you long to see justice like the morning light, and how does Jesus' coming reign give you hope there?
