2 Samuel 20 Devotional
Wisdom at the Wall
“I am among the peaceable and faithful in Israel, but you are trying to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow up the LORD’s inheritance?””2 Samuel 20:19 (BSB)
The quarrel over the king becomes another revolt. Sheba blows the horn and calls Israel away from David, and the northern tribes follow him (20:1-2). David's ten concubines, whom Absalom had taken, live out their days confined as widows (20:3). Joab greets Amasa as a brother, takes him by the beard as if to kiss him, and stabs him (20:9-10). The kingdom is held together by a man who kills his rivals.
Then one voice changes everything. As Joab batters the wall of Abel, a wise woman calls him to listen. She speaks for the peaceable and faithful in Israel and asks why he would swallow up the LORD's inheritance (20:19). Joab says he wants only Sheba, and her counsel spares the city. In a chapter of swords, God preserves his people through a woman who seeks peace. She reminds Joab that Israel belongs to the LORD, not to anyone's struggle for power. Jesus calls peacemakers blessed (Matthew 5:9), and his people can speak for peace where others reach for swords.
To think about: Where could a calm, wise word from you help bring peace instead of more conflict?
