2 Chronicles 30 Devotional
Pardon for the Unprepared
“And the LORD heard Hezekiah and healed the people.”2 Chronicles 30:20 (BSB)
Hezekiah sends letters from Beersheba to Dan, even to the north. The letters urge the people to return to the LORD so that he will return to them, for he is gracious and merciful and will not turn away from those who come back (30:6-9). Many laugh, yet some humble themselves and come to Jerusalem, and in Judah God gives the people one heart to obey (30:10-12).
The Passover is held a month late. Many from the north have not purified themselves as the law requires, yet they eat anyway (30:17-18). Hezekiah prays that the good LORD would pardon everyone who truly seeks God, even if they are not clean by the sanctuary's rules (30:18-19). And the LORD hears Hezekiah and heals the people (30:20). The joy that follows is unmatched since Solomon (30:26). God's welcome rests on his goodness, not on his guests' readiness. Jesus said he would never drive away anyone who comes to him (John 6:37). You do not have to be fully prepared to come home.
To think about: What are you waiting to fix in yourself before coming to God, and what does Hezekiah's prayer tell you about that?
