2 Chronicles 27 Devotional

A Quiet and Steady Reign

“So Jotham grew powerful because he ordered his ways before the LORD his God.”2 Chronicles 27:6 (BSB)

Jotham gets only nine verses, and there is nothing dramatic in them. He does what is right, as his father Uzziah had done, but he does not enter the temple as Uzziah did (27:2). He builds, fortifies, and defeats the Ammonites (27:3-5).

The chapter's summary is the key. Jotham grew powerful because he kept his ways steady before the LORD his God (27:6). His life was arranged with God in view, and God established him. Yet the same chapter admits that the people still acted corruptly (27:2). One faithful king could not change every heart, and the next chapter shows how quickly things fall apart under his son. Still, the LORD noticed and honored a life lived steadily before him, even one without famous victories or sweeping reforms. Most days do not bring a battle or a revival, only the next ordinary choice. Living those days before the LORD is not small in his eyes, and he is the one who makes them stand.

To think about: What ordinary part of your day could you arrange more deliberately with God in view?

About 2 Chronicles 27: Jotham Grows Strong

Jotham follows his father’s good example but stays out of the temple, though the people remain corrupt. He builds the temple gate, cities, and forts, subdues the Ammonites, and grows powerful because he lives faithfully before God, then dies and is succeeded by his son Ahaz.
