2 Chronicles 23 Devotional

A Covenant to Be His People

“Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and the king and the people that they would be the LORD’s people.”2 Chronicles 23:16 (BSB)

After six years, Jehoiada the priest acts. He gathers the Levites and family heads, shows them the king's son, and grounds the whole plan in God's word. This boy must reign, as the LORD promised concerning David's descendants (23:3). Jehoiada crowns him, presents him with the Testimony, and the people acclaim him king (23:9-11). Athaliah rushes in to protest and is taken out and put to death beyond the temple grounds (23:12-15).

Then Jehoiada makes a covenant that he, the king, and the people will be the LORD's people (23:16). They tear down the temple of Baal, return the priests and Levites to their posts, and offer burnt offerings with rejoicing and song, as David had ordered (23:17-18). Through the prophet Nathan, God had promised David a throne established forever (2 Samuel 7:16), and that promise is why a hidden child could become king. Belonging to the LORD is not something his people invent. It is a covenant he invites them to renew.

To think about: What would it look like for you to renew your commitment to belong to the LORD this week?
