2 Chronicles 18 Devotional
A Cry in the Wrong Battle
Jehoshaphat ties himself to Ahab by marriage, and soon he is agreeing to go to war at Ahab's side (18:1-3). He asks for the word of the LORD first, and he presses for a true prophet when four hundred offer the same easy answer (18:4-6). Micaiah warns that Ahab will fall. Ahab has him jailed and goes anyway, taking Jehoshaphat with him (18:16-28).
In the battle, Ahab disguises himself while Jehoshaphat wears his royal robes (18:29). The Aramean chariot commanders, ordered to hunt only the king of Israel, mistake Jehoshaphat for him and close in. Jehoshaphat cries out, the LORD helps him, and God draws the attackers away (18:31). Ahab, meanwhile, is struck by an arrow shot at random and dies at sunset (18:33-34). Jehoshaphat should never have been there, and a prophet tells him so in the next chapter (19:2). Yet when he cried out, God heard him in the middle of his own mistake. You do not have to climb out of a bad decision before calling on him.
To think about: Is there a situation you got into by your own poor choices where you have hesitated to ask God for help?
