1 Timothy 3 Devotional
The Mystery at the Center
“By common confession, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was proclaimed among the nations, was believed in throughout the world, was taken up in glory.”1 Timothy 3:16 (BSB)
Much of 1 Timothy 3 reads like a job description, but nearly every qualification concerns character rather than talent. An overseer must be above reproach, self-controlled, hospitable, gentle, not quarrelsome, free from the love of money, and able to manage his own household well (3:2-5). Deacons must be dignified, honest in speech, and tested before they serve (3:8-10). God cares deeply about who leads his people, not only about what they can do.
Then Paul explains why it matters. The church is God's household, the church of the living God, which holds up and supports the truth (3:15). And at the center of that truth is a person. Paul closes with a confession that traces Christ's whole path, from his appearing in human flesh to his being taken up in glory (3:16). Godliness in leaders, and in every believer, grows out of this revealed mystery. The character this chapter asks for is, in the end, the likeness of the Christ who stands at its center.
To think about: Which quality in this list do you most need God to grow in you, whatever your role in the church?
