1 Samuel 19 Devotional

Kept on Every Side

Saul now orders openly that David be killed. Again and again, someone stands in the way. Jonathan speaks up for his friend, reminding his father of the great salvation the LORD worked through David, and Saul swears an oath to spare him (19:4-6). The oath does not last. When the spear flies again, Michal lowers David from a window and lays an idol with goat hair in his bed to buy him time (19:12-13).

David runs to Samuel, and Saul sends men to seize him. Three times his messengers arrive, and three times the Spirit of God comes upon them so that they prophesy instead (19:20-21). Finally Saul goes himself, and the Spirit overcomes him too, until he lies stripped before Samuel all day and night (19:23-24). A friend's plea, a wife's ruse and the Spirit's overwhelming power all serve one purpose: God keeps the one he has anointed. No plan against his purposes can finally succeed, and that is a steady comfort when others seem to hold power over you.

To think about: Where do you need to remember that God's purposes for you are not at the mercy of other people's plans?
