1 Samuel 1 Devotional
Poured Out Before the LORD
“So in the course of time, Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.””1 Samuel 1:20 (BSB)
Hannah's story begins with a closed womb and a rival who will not let her forget it. Year after year at Shiloh, Peninnah taunts her until she weeps and cannot eat (1:6-7). The text says plainly that the LORD had closed her womb (1:5). Hannah does not hide her grief from God. She takes it to the one who could change things, praying so deeply that her lips move without sound, and Eli takes her for a drunk (1:13). She tells him she has been emptying out her heart to the LORD (1:15).
Then the LORD remembers her (1:19), and Samuel is born, his name tied to her asking (1:20). God had not been indifferent all those years. He was preparing an answer larger than one family's joy: a prophet for the whole nation. Hannah gives the boy back to the LORD, and the chapter ends in worship (1:28). Your grief does not need to be tidied up before you bring it to him. He hears prayers spoken only in the heart.
To think about: What grief or longing have you been carrying alone that you could pour out honestly before the LORD today?
