1 Peter 4 Devotional

Entrusted to a Faithful Creator

“So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should entrust their souls to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.”1 Peter 4:19 (BSB)

Peter tells his readers not to be surprised by the fiery trial that has come on them, as if something strange were happening (4:12). People they once lived like find it strange that they no longer join in the same reckless living, and they heap abuse on them (4:4). Suffering for the name of Christ is not a sign that God has left. It is a share in Christ's own sufferings, and the Spirit of glory rests on those who are insulted for him (4:13-14).

In the middle of that pressure, Peter points them toward one another. Love deeply, because love covers many sins (4:8). Welcome each other without complaining (4:9). Each believer has received a gift from God's varied grace and is to use it as a steward, serving with the strength God supplies (4:10-11). Nothing in the chapter asks them to generate their own endurance. The chapter closes with the right response to suffering: entrust yourself to a faithful Creator and keep doing good (4:19). The One who made you has not lost track of you.

To think about: What hardship do you need to entrust to your faithful Creator today, while you keep doing the good in front of you?

About 1 Peter 4: Suffering as a Christian

Since Christ suffered in the flesh, believers should arm themselves with the same mindset and live for God's will rather than human passions. They should love earnestly, serve with their gifts, and not be surprised by fiery trials but rejoice to share Christ's sufferings.
