1 Kings 9 Devotional
Honest Words After Answered Prayer
“And the LORD said to him: “I have heard your prayer and petition before Me. I have consecrated this temple, which you have built, by putting My Name there forever; My eyes and My heart will be there for all time.”1 Kings 9:3 (BSB)
The temple and palace are finished, and the LORD appears to Solomon a second time (9:1-2). He begins with good news. He has heard Solomon's prayer, he has set the temple apart by placing his name there, and his eyes and heart will be there for all time (9:3). Then he speaks with unusual bluntness. If Solomon walks with integrity, his throne will stand. If he or his sons turn to other gods, Israel will be cut off from the land, and this splendid temple will become a ruin that leaves passersby appalled (9:4-9).
The warning is a kindness. God does not let Solomon assume that a magnificent building or a past blessing will protect him whatever he does. The rest of the chapter mixes success with signs of strain (9:10-28). God's honesty is part of his care. He tells his people the truth about where their hearts can drift while there is still time to listen, and his warnings are invitations to stay near.
To think about: Is there a warning in God's word you have been treating as meant for someone else, and how might it be an invitation to stay near?
