1 Kings 7 Devotional

Skill Offered Back to God

Chapter 7 begins with Solomon's own palace, thirteen years in the building, including a hall where he would sit to judge (7:1-7). Then it turns to Huram, a highly skilled bronze worker brought from Tyre (7:13-14). He casts the two great pillars, the huge basin called the Sea resting on twelve oxen, the stands, the basins, the pots and the shovels (7:15-45). There is so much bronze that no one even weighs it (7:47).

The God of Israel is not indifferent to beauty or craftsmanship. Long before, he had given Bezalel his Spirit along with the skill to make the furnishings of the tabernacle (Exodus 31:3). Here the work of a skilled craftsman, the gifts David had dedicated, and the gold of Solomon all end up in the house of the LORD (7:51). Every ability anyone has came from God first. Whatever your hands are good at today can be offered back to the One who gave it, and he can use it for his own purposes.

To think about: What skill or ability do you have that you could offer back to God as his gift in your work today?
