1 Kings 21 Devotional

Justice for a Vineyard

““Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the calamity during his days, but I will bring it upon his house in the days of his son.””1 Kings 21:29 (BSB)

Naboth's vineyard is his family's inheritance, and he will not sell it to the king (21:3). Ahab sulks on his bed and refuses to eat (21:4). So Jezebel writes letters in Ahab's name, has a fast proclaimed, has two scoundrels accuse Naboth falsely, and has him stoned (21:8-13). Every step looks official.

But God has seen it all. He sends Elijah to meet Ahab in that very vineyard and charge him with murder and theft (21:19). The judgment announced on Ahab, Jezebel and their house is severe (21:21-24). Then comes the surprise. Ahab tears his clothes and fasts in sackcloth, and the LORD tells Elijah that because Ahab has humbled himself, the disaster will not come in his lifetime (21:27-29). God's justice sees through respectable lies, and his mercy responds to even a late humbling. Jesus himself faced false witnesses before his death (Mark 14:55-57), and through that death God offers mercy to the guilty. No wrong is hidden from him, and no humbled heart is ignored.

To think about: What wrong, done to you or by you, do you need to bring before the God who sees through every lie and answers humility with mercy?

About 1 Kings 21: Naboth's Vineyard

Naboth refuses to sell Ahab his family land, and Jezebel arranges false witnesses so that Naboth is stoned and Ahab can seize the vineyard. Elijah confronts Ahab with the LORD's sentence on him, Jezebel, and his house. When Ahab humbles himself, the LORD delays the disaster until his son's time.
