1 Chronicles 25 Devotional

Teacher and Pupil Alike

“They cast lots for their duties, young and old alike, teacher as well as pupil.”1 Chronicles 25:8 (BSB)

David and the army commanders set apart sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun to prophesy with lyres, harps and cymbals (25:1). Their music was ministry. Jeduthun prophesied with the harp, giving thanks and praise to the LORD (25:3). Heman's fourteen sons and three daughters are described as God's gift, given through his promises (25:5). All of them were trained and skilled in the songs of the LORD, two hundred eighty-eight in all (25:7).

When they cast lots for their duties, it was young and old alike, teacher as well as pupil (25:8). The master musician and the beginner went into the same lot, and every turn was service in the house of God. Skill and training mattered, but the place to serve came from God. Paul pictures the church teaching one another as they sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs to God with gratitude (Colossians 3:16). Whether you lead or are still learning, your praise is welcome, and God does not rank his worshipers by their skill.

To think about: Do you hold back from serving or praising because you feel less skilled than others, and how does this chapter answer that?

About 1 Chronicles 25: The Temple Musicians Appointed

David and his commanders set apart families of the singers Heman, Asaph, and Jeduthun for prophesying with stringed instruments and cymbals as they thank and praise God. Heman’s large family is credited to God’s promise, and the trained singers draw lots for their assignments regardless of age or rank.
