Water Poured Out to God

“And David became greater and greater, for the LORD of Hosts was with him.”1 Chronicles 11:9 (BSB)

All Israel comes to David at Hebron and anoints him king, according to the word of the LORD through Samuel (11:3). He takes the fortress of Zion, and the reason for his rise is stated simply: the LORD of Hosts was with him (11:9). When Eleazar and David held a barley field after the troops fled, it was the LORD who brought about a great victory (11:14).

One story stands out. David longs aloud for water from the well at Bethlehem, and three of his men break through the Philistine camp to bring it (11:17-18). David will not drink it. He pours it out to the LORD, because it was bought at the risk of their lives (11:19). Their sacrifice is too costly to spend on himself. Jesus is the King who turned that pattern around. He did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). The King you follow has poured out his own life for you.

To think about: How does knowing that Jesus gave his life for you change the way you serve him today?
